Users review: Well, actually I would love this one. Perfect on paper. Director / writer Paul Thomas Anderson, the cast, headed by Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. What could go wrong? Scripts. If the movie does not start with a good script, it can turn out well. And it is not. There is no top to this story. And no resolution. It lays flat for more than two hours. Actors give great performances and scenes are built well. Joaquin Phoenix with tragic moment. And then the movie just keep plod along. I'm good with slow film generate. Im fine with a movie that will never be built, and this one is not. It is about an alcoholic? No. Is it about a cult leader? No random moments, between the wine and the leader of the cult, strung together, with no direction, and no points. You can get any scenes from the film, and it will stand on its own as well. Connect together, however, they do not add up to the story. This story should be about something. It has to start somewhere and this is a happening place. The story begins, and then go any. It is better if the resolution of the story just endlessness. The film, however, never set any consistency. And, therefore, can not be alone, forever. It never went anywhere to begin with. Spluge actress left the audience for no apparent reason. Im more of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and was for a while. In this paper, as a figure of L. Ron Hubbard, he overacts to the point of caricature. For my money, the best Seymour Hoffman Boogie Nights, Happiness, or the talented Mr. Ripley. Joaquin Phoenix may be the most talented actors working today America, but he was physically contorted, recurrent disease, torture, alcohol, Freddie put, never given a chance to be real or sympathetic, or bad. He was just, like the rest of the movie, go. The actor, Joaquin Phoenix, has the chops to do anything. Check him out on Reservation Road, Gladiator, Walk the Line, at best, two lover. Two adventurous Phoenix fascinating portrait of a man whose life crumbles feeling crippled beyond all expectations (in it), but by an accident you would have to find ways in which to live. He is riveting. There is nothing he can do given the opportunity. But he's got a chance here.Clearly this movie tries to cultism comment. We know too much, however (Jonestown, Waco, Warren Jeffs), about to receive a fraction of this cult story. Clear that the main character is an alcoholic. But the film never explored turbulence, or addictive, path shows like Celebrity Rehab good health will be. We almost brought close enough to the story to keep the first session in Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but not built and ultimately went nowhere. Just like the rest of film.There some shocking scenes in the movie. But no story to justify it. It's like watching a big screen version of Americas Most awesome Video, - for more than two hours. They are free interesting, but ultimately irrelevant. And it's not like a story about anything I can wrap my arms around. For me, the main failure of this film is that there is no point to it. This is not an art film. It is a pointless movie. And it's not that I do not get it. No Theres nothing to get. Better to spend watching a car accident your time, TV, taken from a dash cam. At least your practice expect much going in. |
